Philip Caldwell

Hi, I’m Philip Caldwell. I live in Emporium, PA with my dog Sam.

I graduated Cameron County High School in 2005. I went on to study Computer Science at RIT in the fall of 2005. Due to financial constraints and a poor job market brought about by the 2008-2009 financial crisis, I left RIT in the spring of 2009. I had completed all required courses, save one. The remaining courses needed for graduation were all elective.

Returning to Emporium, I found work at my relative’s business, Caldwell Corporation. There I was able to use my technical skills programming automated machines and industrial computer vision systems. Namely, Allen-Bradley MicroLogix PLCs and Cognex In-Sight cameras. I also programmed and ran CNC machines, mostly Haas machines. Part of my work included designing, wiring, and troubleshooting the industrial electric component of the automated machines.

One of my more recent ventures has been to design a general purpose computer vision parts inspection machine. The goal was to use a base machine augmented with 3D printed pieces to rapidly adapt it to process a variety of parts. Unfortunately, due to the closure of GKN‘s Emporium facilities this project no longer seems commercially viable.

Currently, I work freelance as an independent contractor in both small business IT as well as industrial automation. Check out my consulting page for more information. I also design and sell Moravian Stars, available via the Cameron County Mercantile.

In my free time I enjoy taking vacations by Amtrak rail. Check out some of my time-lapse videos of the trips. I also enjoy craft beer, my favorite being Dog Fish Head’s ‘Burton Baton‘.
